The City of Banks is adding four trees at Greenville City Park to honor its designation as a Tree City USA. Three Ironwood trees (Parrotia persica) and a Red Maple (Acer rubrum ‘October Glory’) will be planted on Thursday, November 17, 2022. While Arbor Day is traditionally celebrated in April, the City holds its tree planting events in fall to provide new trees a better chance to get established during the fall and winter.
The Ironwood tree was chosen for its beautiful spring-to-fall leaf color, attractive form and unusual bark. The Ironwood brings forth purple, red to bronze leaves in the spring, which turn to green in summer and then crimson, orange and yellow in fall. The Red Maple sports dark green leaves in spring and summer, has tiny red flowers loved by butterflies and displays orange, yellow and red leaves in the fall.
